Five Questions, Five Answers with Scott Barr

In December of 2022, we welcomed our new Board President, Scott Barr. Scott is a WAHS alum and former district educator. Today, he is a Virtual Channel District Sales Manager at Paychex and on-air sports personality with Astound, covering championship high school, NCAA, and professional sports.

He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will serve him well as he leads our board of directors.

We sat down with Scott to learn more about him and his journey to our organization.

What is your history with the Wilson Area School District?

I graduated from Wilson in 1980.  During my years there, I was on the wrestling and tennis team, participated in band, chorus, and the Wilsonaires, and played on the Scholastic Scrimmage team.

My parents also attended WAHS, graduating in 1958.  My dad was actually class president, and captain of the football team.  My mom was a majorette.  As a couple, they were King and Queen of the senior prom!

What is your fondest memory from your time as a student?

SO many incredible memories, but most center around my friendships through band and wrestling.  At the time, the band was one of the best anywhere, and we won many competitions.  I remember summer camps, especially, and sometimes would “fake” playing just so I could listen to the music we were playing.  It really developed my love of music, which continues to this day!

In wrestling, it’s funny, but I remember practices more than anything.  Just bleeding and sweating with your brothers in preparation for competition is something that truly builds character.  Because of my start at Wilson, I have been broadcasting wrestling for 38 years, and in 2019, was honored to be inducted into the District XI Wrestling Hall of Fame.

What’s one piece of advice you would offer today’s Wilson Warriors?

Take advantage of every opportunity that surrounds you right now.  The Wilson experience can prepare you for anything you face in life, so embrace it!

What made you want to become involved with the Wilson Area Partners in Education Foundation?

I had no idea about two things:  First, that the tax base in Wilson had dropped to the point where educational programs were directly impacted.  And second, that there was an organization dedicated to helping!  The foundation does good, important work, which truly impacts a huge number of students.  I finally had a chance to give a small amount back to the school that continues to mean a lot to me, so I jumped in!

What do you want people to know about WAPEF?

The work we do is broad-based, impactful, and necessary.  It’s also expensive!  It doesn’t take a lot to help out.  If you have connections, some volunteer time, a particular skill, or just a donation…it ALL helps!
